Back by popular demand we are again offering this challenging advanced workshop. As you can tell from the pictures this is a lot of work! Made from 3inch thick northern white pine this chest makes a great heirloom keepsake. I think it is my all time favorite project.
True to the era, we shape this chest using everything from an adze, to a scrub plane to a custom made curved sole wooden plane. With dovetails cut on the round this will challenge everyone. The pine is easy to work but also requires a high level of skill and patience, it is not a very forgiving wood and joints have to fit the first time, the fibers will compress easily and the dovetails will look their best if only assembled once. The hardware will be partially completed though we will have a bit of work to get that antique look.
This class will require the maximum amount of time we can put in during the five days. Come ready to work, we will start each day at 6:30 and you can stay till at least 10pm, longer if you need it. This class requires competency in layout, hand planing and dovetails. Students must have had the “Training the Hand” workshop to register. You will need the following tools;
Dovetail tools including a full set of chisels
Fine cross cut saw
Scrub plane
Smoother
Jack or jointer
Shooting board
Sharpening stones
Small router plane
Winding sticks
Panel gauge
Rip and cross cut panel saws
Squares and an adjustable protractor
18 inch or longer straight edge
I will supply the special round bottom planes, the grooving planes, the adze and the curved moulds we use when working the chest sides
The materials are an extra cost and I will procure them. We use 12/4 Northern White Pine for the sides, 8/4 for the top, 5/4 for the ends and 4/4 for the bottom. You are welcome to bring your own but please let me know of your intent when registering. Bring along a good fan, whether or not it is hot outside you will want a breeze to help keep you cool. Anti fatigue mats are a good idea as well. Please contact Rob directly to register for this workshop. 1-506-650-4666
