All of my boxes feature this wood hinge. I was taught this technique by Dr. Dale Nish at BYU in the early 80's. I have since made thousands of boxes and have worked to improve the process as well as design a drilling jig to facilitate the hinge making.
I try to match the hinge wood as close as I can to the wood of the box, the idea is to conceal the hinge in its closed position. It is very smooth operating, it is very strong and should last as long as the rest of the box. The part I enjoy most is handing a box to someone and watching their expression as they discover and try to figure out the hinge. I hope you enjoy the boxes as much as I enjoy making them.
