Fret Saws

Rob Cosman shows how to set up a fret saw for sawing dovetail waste.

Fret Saw with 12 Blades

Fret Saw with 12 Blades

Rob prefers to saw the bulk of the waste vs chopping.  With narrow pins sawing is definitely your best choice.  The saw needs to be tensioned properly to prevent bowing during use.  In addition to the frame adjustment, these saws have a wing nut at the top to really cinch the blade.  To improve control we now tape the handle like a hockey stick.  This has made a big difference for first time dovetailers.  12 blades included.

Reminder - Don't forget to order hockey tape!
This is the easiest way to improve your grip on smooth hard grip tool handles. I use it on my fret saw, some of my screwdrivers and it works great on “F” clamp handles.

5 inch Fret Saw Blades

5 inch Fret Saw Blades

5 inch fret saw blades, 12.5 teeth per inch skip tooth. $6.00 per dozen

I use this saw blade in my fret saw, it is small enough to slip down a .024 kerf without leaving marks and it is coarse enough to cut fast. The skip tooth design helps with the sawdust removal which really speeds up the cut.
